California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom stated when questioned about contemplating a campaign for president after the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

He has come to the forefront as a high-profile critic of the former president's team, leveraging his online platforms and championing a initiative that would increase Democratic congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has invited attacks from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to pull government money from California and warned suspending the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from the state," he said, following a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that led to loss of life and injured individuals.

His administration pointed out that the national authorities had approved the driver's employment repeatedly, which enabled him to receive a CDL under U.S. law.

Duffy had earlier indicated he was withholding $40m from California for not enforcing English language requirements for CDL holders.

Strong Response from the Team

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," the governor's team retorted in a previous release addressing Duffy's threats. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A recent survey showed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom stated while visiting several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.

"The idea that a individual who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I await who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
