Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after the ex-president charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Message That Sparked the Controversy

The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in military or intelligence capacities.

"As we did, you all swore an pledge to defend and defend this founding document," the officials declared in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our national charter."

Trump's Angry Response

The recorded statement seemed to provoke a furious reply from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he declared: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Leaders Respond

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a unified announcement denouncing the statements.

"Violent politics has no place in America," they wrote. "Representatives who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional national pride and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the security of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical online messages and recant his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the statement continued.

Lawmakers' Firm Reaction

The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a statement.

"We are former service members and security experts who love this country and made an vow to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important duty."

"The significant point is that the ex-president deems it punishable by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they execute their vow to the founding principles and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "Every American must come together and denounce the former president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."

More Governmental Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."

He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."

The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in American history."

The Republican leader also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the terminology and decide all that."

Administration Statement

During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the official said. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the president's legal commands."

She said: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that system is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally supporting."
