NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.
Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a ādeceptive figure and a liarā and alleging of having āa history of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā Nonetheless, in a new development, Adams reversed course, revealing he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in areas where he maintains significant backing.
āIt is crucial to energize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how vital this race is,ā the mayor stated.
Adams continued, āResidents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and Iām going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and Iām going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.ā
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has made headlines worldwide and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
In a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would reject Adamsās endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.
During a separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters asking about the support announcement by saying, āI'm meeting Andrew this evening.ā
This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
