We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.

Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
