New Year's Partygoers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Predicted Across the UK

Forecasters are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are expected to be chilly, meaning extra layers essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Expected to Fall Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Advisories Activated

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this signified the weather could to lead to significant impacts across medical and care provision. This encompasses a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
