Nutrition Assistance Expected to Expire for Over 40 Million Amid Continuing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated this past weekend that SNAP funds under one of the country’s largest welfare initiatives are not going out next month amid the persistent government funding lapse.

Impasse Persists Through Its Third Week

The funding lapse lasted three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, which followed calls from over 200 House Democrats urging the USDA to tap into emergency reserves to fund next month's benefits.

“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” the USDA stated. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.

National Consequences

Tens of millions of people count on these food benefits, per the USDA. In certain states, including New Mexico, reliance on this assistance reaches 21% of residents.

Internal communications seen by Reuters revealed that the department decided against using emergency reserves to cover next month's assistance.

Legislative Deadlock

Congressional leaders continue to disagree about the way to fund and reopen government operations.

Comments by the director at a prominent policy organization noted that federal leadership could have acted to prepare in advance to prevent benefits from running out.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves weeks ago to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the comments added. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to push upper chamber Democrats to approve a spending bill to restart government operations.

States Prepare

Governors in Louisiana and Virginia activated emergency protocols in recent days to allocate funds for hunger relief expecting SNAP benefits not being issued during the upcoming period.
