Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead for World Cup In Spite of Objections from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, even after the Egyptian and Iranian football federations raised objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations Alongside External Festivities

Local organizers have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture between Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit Pride flags inside the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the fan activities beyond Seattle Stadium,” said the vice-president of communications.

Legal Context Behind the Objections

Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it did not want to be associated with events that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Symbols

The international federation holds operational control over match venues during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.
