The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years Old

The world mourns the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in spreading reggae music across the globe. He has died at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his life’s path. To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic sound and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and longstanding fanbase.

In addition to his music achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

He was one of just a handful of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
