The Mystery Within that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a moment that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the events in the tunnel is detailed in the stage play the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. From then on, he battles the control of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
