Although not quite at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miamiâs iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
âThe swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,â Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
âUnless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,â the mayor added. âI hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.â
The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming âsix-sevenâ â deriving from a hip-hop line â often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named â6-7â its 2025 word of the year.
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge âfar from charcoal and roasting pansâ, according to the ceremony's official statement.
âThe annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,â said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
âIt captures the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.â
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
