Nearly a week following the powerful storm pummelled into the island's west coast with record force, residents in devastated communities by the shoreline are persistently anticipating for relief.
Many of the roads are clogged with rubble and residents remain cut off with little food, no power or running water, and unknown restoration dates.
Officials reported on recently that at least 28 people in Jamaica have perished after the storm struck as a devastating Category 5 hurricane with 185 mph (297km/h) sustained winds.
This represents almost a 50% increase in the fatalities within a day, and figures may increase as authorities make progress into new parts of the island in the near future.
The Westmoreland region is thought to contain the second highest number of potential fatalities, after St Elizabeth to the south east. The cyclone's core hit somewhere between the bordering areas. In St Elizabeth an the vast majority of residences have been destroyed.
'We don't know what lies ahead', referred to the scene as ''absolute ruin'.
A long stretch of road traveling westward toward Westmoreland Parish meanders through a cemetery of vegetation – heaps of broken wood, broken and contorted, spreading across the countryside.
Heaps of wreckage are accumulated beside the region's highways, near compromised edifices, shipping crates turned on their side and crowds of people wading through the destruction.
Local inhabitants in this coastal town, a coastal town and commercial hub on the perimeter of Westmoreland, say the wait for assistance is becoming frustrating.
One resident said he has been told assistance would arrive, but "they haven't appeared"
He positioned himself under cover on a makeshift stool in front of a structure scarcely remaining – its entire roof gone – uncertain about future steps.
About 400,000 people in Jamaica were without power as of Friday , and an untold number more have become disconnected from communication networks, isolated from external contact.
Government representatives revealed that more than 200 StarLink devices have been deployed across the island to assist with online connectivity.
Officials responded to concerns the authorities have faced for its response, saying there were "various components" causing slowdowns.
"Logistical challenges, landing zones, access issues and operational conditions," representatives explained.
The country's leader stressed that the "initial priority is on clearing debris, restoring essential services", as well as distributing nourishment and healthcare items.
In a tiny community near Whitehouse, one affected individual rested against a slab of broken concrete. In the background, the community he's always lived in throughout his existence has been destroyed, plus his means of survival.
"Our community is completely destroyed," he stated. The fishing infrastructure was demolished and is now "leveled"
"The storm eliminated all possessions," he revealed, incorporating his vessel, which he characterizes as "thoroughly damaged"
Residents of these regions are characterized by dignity and endurance, terms frequently mentioned on local radio stations and apparent through hopeful perspectives in the trying conditions.
Located below the structure of a heavily ruined edifice, a local man said he has suffered total deprivation, but "we need to preserve hope and positive outlook continues"
"Can't give up. Not gonna give up," he said.
It is the same tone demonstrated by an agricultural worker, located in his transport selling pears, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes – the last of his produce that was spared from the storm.
Regarding his agricultural land, he said: "Everything is destroyed. Complete demolition happened" But he quickly followed up with: "We have to give God thanks we're alive"
Meanwhile, external support is commencing delivery into Jamaica.
The US State Department announced that its Disaster Assistance Response Team had reached the island. Nations such as Britain have also pledged millions in aid relief funds and necessary provisions.
