Wealthy businessman Jared Isaacman has been formally approved as the new administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, concluding an atypical nomination process where Trump nominated him, pulled the nomination, and then put him forward again.

Isaacman, an amateur jet pilot who was the first private citizen to conduct a spacewalk, is also the first agency head in a generation to come straight from outside government.

For many, the legacy of his leadership will be determined by one crucial test: its ability to return humans to the lunar surface in advance of China.

The President has stated explicitly a ambition for the America to create a sustained presence on the moon, both to enable harvesting materials and to serve as a staging point for journeys to the Red Planet.

Confirmation Vote and Nomination Drama

On This week, the Senate confirmed the nomination with a bipartisan vote.

Trump first withdrew the nomination in the spring, pointing to a "thorough review of prior associations".

At the point, the president was publicly feuding with the SpaceX CEO, one of his biggest supporters, with whom Isaacman has professional ties.

The new administrator indicates he is now completely supportive of Trump's mission to extract lunar resources, putting him at odds with Elon Musk, who has stated that lunar missions is a distraction from the journey to reaching Mars.

Vision for NASA

In the current cosmic competition, countries are competing to utilize the lunar surface.

“Now is not the time for inaction but a time for progress because if we lose ground, if we make a mistake, we may never catch up, and the consequences could change the global dynamics here on Earth,” he told lawmakers during his hearing.

The business leader sees introducing more industry players as key to meeting those targets, according to a circulated document outlining his strategy for NASA.

In his testimony, he reaffirmed the plan, which he developed when he was originally put forward, but clarified it was a developing document.

His welcoming of multiple providers could also cause friction with Musk. Last week, Isaacman praised the award of a lucrative deal to Blue Origin, which is one of the main challengers of SpaceX.

In the leaked plan, he suggested NASA should forge stronger ties with the scientific community, casting the agency as a "force multiplier for scientific discovery".

He highlighted the planned deployment of the Roman Telescope as a prime illustration.

"And if we be close to something extraordinary - like deploying the Roman Telescope - I will leave no stone unturned to get the program to the pad, even using my own resources if that's what it takes to deliver the science," he stated.

Background and Net Worth

According to reports, Isaacman's net worth is estimated at around $1.2bn, made mostly from his payment processing company and the divestment of his company that trained pilots and operated a collection of military aircraft.

The NASA administrator role will be his initial foray in public office, a contrast to the last two people who served as head of the agency.

He will replace Sean Duffy, who has been the acting administrator since July.
